CALGARY LABORATORY SERVICES HEMATOPATHOLOGIST 17-EXT-002

Calgary Laboratory Services (CLS) and the Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine (DPLM) are seeking a full time qualified Hematopathologists. Applicants should have a high level of training and diagnostic skills in neoplastic and benign hematological pathology. Candidates must have strong references and possess a strong track record of collegiality with co-workers. Fellowship training/Ph.D in Hemostasis or experimental hematology would be an asset. The successful candidates will work with a team of seven Hematopathologists to provide fully integrated and specialized consult services within CLS.

CLS is a multi-site, regionalized laboratory providing comprehensive laboratory services to Calgary and surrounding communities. CLS, which processes >25,000,000 tests per year is one of the largest hematopathology practices in Canada serving 1.3 million people. Our group practice, based at Foothills Medical Centre and our large state of the art community based central laboratory (the Diagnostic and Scientific Centre) serves in five hospitals. Annual workload includes >1800 bone marrows and > 1000 lymph node consults, and >4000 complex flow-cytometry cases. CLS also has busy special hematology services including Hb electrophoresis, molecular hematology, tissue typing, and special coagulation laboratories. The cancer cytogenetic laboratory works closely with Hematopathologists to provide karyotypic and FISH analysis. We provide supportive services for the provincial bone marrow transplant service based in Calgary (>200 BMT/yr). CLS is an independent, but publically funded organization that is a wholly owned subsidiary of Alberta Health Services (AHS), and is affiliated with the University of Calgary (UofC). The successful candidates will receive a Clinical Faculty appointment. The DPLM and CLS offer residency training programs in Anatomic Pathology, General Pathology and Neuropathology, as well as Fellowship training in 13 subspecialty areas, including hematopathology, cytogenetics and tissue typing.

Calgary, the largest city in Alberta, is located within an hour’s drive of the Rocky Mountains, and within a half day’s drive of eight national parks. There are many opportunities for indoor and outdoor activities (three nearby UNESCO World Heritage Sites, world class athletic facilities, and many cultural events).

Job Summary & Responsibilities
Each Hematopathologist takes direction from, and reports to the Clinical Section Chief, Hematopathology, who in turn reports to the Vice President Medical Operations (CLS) and Zone Clinical Department Head (AHS). Hematopathologists must maintain the highest possible standards of practice including prompt delivery of services to match established performance indicators and turn-around times, must actively participate in such activities as quality assurance, quality control, and quality improvement programs, must provide on-call services, and must actively participate in teaching.

Qualifications
Qualifications include a MD, eligibility for licensure in the Province of Alberta, and certification in Hematological Pathology by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada as well as high quality subspecialty fellowship training in hematopathology. Compensation
CLS provides an excellent remuneration package including relocation assistance. Albertans pay no provincial sales tax. Options to function as either a contractor with or an employee of CLS exist. Options to function as either a contractor with or an employee of CLS exist. Starting remuneration is commensurate with the level of fellowship training and experience. Remuneration range for a Hematopathologist in Alberta is $337,938 to $393,113 annually.
