Calgary Laboratory Services (CLS) and Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine (DPLM) are seeking a full-time Medical Microbiologist. The ideal applicant will possess expertise in routine and complex clinical microbiology, particularly practice in a high-volume rapidly changing environment. An interest and experience in laboratory management including quality assurance, epidemiology and data analysis and/or mycology, molecular or virology would also be an asset, but all qualified Medical Microbiologists are invited to apply. Candidates must have strong references and possess a strong track record of collegiality with co-workers. The successful candidate will join CLS Microbiology’s complement of medical staff, which currently has 7.5 FTE.
CLS Microbiology provides supervision and medical consultation to services in Southern Alberta. The successful candidate will be required to provide diagnostic microbiology consultation, laboratory and technical expertise, and strategic guidance in microbiology and molecular diagnostics and should have experience in a high volume setting with a similar case complexity.
In the future, all publicly-funded laboratory services in Alberta are to be delivered by one wholly-owned subsidiary of Alberta Health Services. Calgary Laboratory Services will be integrated into the larger subsidiary responsible for overseeing all laboratory services in the province, whether currently publicly or privately delivered. This transition is in the planning stage and is the latest step in creating a sustainable, long-term lab services model for Alberta that meets the rising number and complexity of lab tests, and the future health needs of Albertans.
Currently, CLS is a multi-site, regionalized laboratory providing comprehensive laboratory services to Calgary and surrounding communities. CLS processes 30 million total tests annually within all laboratory disciplines, that includes analysis of >1,000,000 microbiology samples. CLS is affiliated with the University of Calgary (UofC) from which the successful candidate will receive a Clinical Faculty appointment and will be expected to participate in teaching students, residents and fellows. The DPLM and CLS offer residency training programs in Anatomic Pathology, General Pathology, Neuropathology and Medical Microbiology, as well as Fellowship training in subspecialty areas within Anatomic Pathology, Hematopathology and Clinical Biochemistry.
Calgary, the largest city in Alberta, is located within an hour’s drive of the Rocky Mountains, and within a half day’s drive of eight national parks. There are many opportunities for indoor and outdoor activities (three nearby UNESCO World Heritage Sites, world class athletic facilities, and many cultural events.
Job Summary & Responsibilities
CLS Medical Microbiologists take direction from, and report to, the Clinical Section Chief, Microbiology, who in turn reports to the Vice President Medical Operations (CLS) and Zone Clinical Department Head (AHS). Medical Microbiologists must maintain the highest possible standards of practice including prompt delivery of services to match established performance indicators and turn-around times, must actively participate in such activities as quality assurance, quality control and quality improvement programs, and is expected to provide on-call services.
Qualifications include an MD, eligibility for licensure in the Province of Alberta, and certification in Medical Microbiology by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (or equivalent).
An excellent remuneration package including relocation assistance is provided. Albertans pay no provincial sales tax. Options to function as either a contractor or an employee exist. Remuneration for a Medical Microbiologist in Alberta is based on a salary grid according to years of experience after certification, which is competitive with compensation in other Canadian jurisdictions. Remuneration range for a Medical Microbiologist in Alberta is $350,197 to $407,373 annually.
