The Dr. Cam Coady Seminar was established to commemorate Dr. Coady’s great love of medicine and to ensure that his goals and objectives to achieve excellence in health care continue to be fostered. The yearly seminar will continue Dr. Coady’s dedication to the general improvement in patient care and to the advancement of education and research in the general operation of medical care.
Dr. Cam Coady was born in Vancouver, educated at Vancouver College and the University of British Columbia, and subsequently graduated in medicine from McGill University in 1949. He became Director of Laboratories at the Royal Columbian Hospital in January 1958 and developed a unique health care delivery program for laboratory medicine in the Fraser Valley area of British Columbia. This program provides a professionally integrated service for both hospitals and out-patients of the area, and includes services to 13 hospitals (over 2,000 acute care and 1,000 extended care beds), the B.C. Coroners’ Service and the out-patient laboratories of B.C. Biomedical Laboratories Ltd. The emphasis is on excellence in service to patients and physicians as recognized in the citation from the B.C. Medical Association where they described him as "the architect of lab medicine as it exists within organized medicine in British Columbia". Cam was awarded the B.C. Medical Association’s Silver Medal Award for his service to the profession on October 2, 1987.
