Full-Time Academic Hematopathologist

IWK Health and Dalhousie University
Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine (DPLM) at IWK Health in Halifax, Nova Scotia, is seeking an Academic Hematopathologist for a Women’s and Children’s Tertiary Care Health Centre serving the Maritime Provinces’ population of 1.9 million people.

The Hematopathologist will join a group of three Hematopathologists that provide medical direction and clinical service for Blood Transfusion and Laboratory Hematology services at IWK DPLM and will also share clinical service coverage at the nearby Adult Hematology Laboratory at the QEII Health Science Centre (QEIIHSC) in collaboration with another six Hematopathologists. The IWK DPLM provides the only pediatric Hematology/Oncology service for all of Nova Scotia, and consultation services for the Maritimes. The IWK is also the sole provider of specialized prenatal immunohematology testing for Nova Scotia and is a referral center for pediatric hematopathology for the Atlantic Provinces. The QEII HSC serves a wide variety of patient programs including hematology, oncology, bleeding disorders, bone marrow and organ transplantation and blood transfusion. The IWK Hematopathologists also represent the pediatric and maternal components of post-graduate medical training for Royal College-accredited programs in Hematological Pathology and Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at Dalhousie University.  Research and teaching opportunities are plentiful in partnership with an active hospital and university community.

Applicants must hold Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) certification (or equivalent) in Hematological Pathology. Previous experience or additional training in pediatric hematopathology and transfusion medicine is an asset. Experience in administrative leadership would also be a strength in this role. The successful candidate will be eligible for a primary academic appointment with the Dalhousie University Department of Pathology, with academic rank dependent upon experience and qualifications. Cross-appointment opportunities also exist.
