The Departments of Oncology and Pathology & Laboratory Medicine, in conjunction with Arnie Charbonneau Cancer Institute, Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary and Cancer Control Alberta, Alberta Health Services (AHS) invite applications for an appointment with Tenure for an academic pathologist/clinician-scientist at the Associate Professor or Professor level to lead the Precision Oncology Hub (former Translational Laboratories) located within the Tom Baker Cancer Centre (TBCC).

The selected candidate will be nominated for a Canadian Institutes for Health Research (CIHR) Tier 1 Canada Research Chair (CRC) in Precision and Molecular Oncology. This position is also linked with the Alberta Cancer Foundation (ACF) Engineered Air Chair in Cancer Research, which is an endowed chair that offers an outstanding opportunity to develop a successful independent and collaborative research program in the broad areas of translational cancer research and experimental therapeutics. This is an endowed $1.7M Chair with the mandate to provide visionary leadership in basic and clinical science, with a focus on developing and maintaining a world-class cancer research program, through multidisciplinary collaborations within the Cumming School of Medicine and across the University of Calgary. With these significant resources, the successful candidate is expected to continue attracting additional resource to promote the expansion of translational cancer research.Other strengths in the environment are a university-wide genomics and bioinformatics initiative led by the Alberta Children’s Hospital Research Institute and the Robson DNA Science Centre within the Arnie Charbonneau Cancer Institute.

The Precision Oncology Hub is the major cancer research core facility for the AHS cancer program and Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary. The successful applicant will have an opportunity to develop and grow the current precision oncology program. The successful candidate will join an expanding team of clinicians and scientists engaged in biomarker discovery, cancer genomics, and facilitate the design and execution of clinical trials of targeted therapies. The Precision Oncology Hub currently supports the discovery and validation of molecular tests to guide the use of novel cancer therapeutics. Its capabilities include quantitative immunohistochemistry, tissue microarray construction, pharmacogenomics / pharmacokinetic analyses, and next generation sequencing. An outstanding group of staff scientists are supported by a core budget to operate the facility. The Precision Oncology Hub Staff are currently engaged in over 40 university-based, industry-sponsored, and cooperative clinical trial group collaborations.

The TBCC is a tertiary referral centre and the major treatment, research and education facility for southern Alberta. Over 7,000 new patients are seen each year at the TBCC. The construction of freestanding comprehensive Cancer Centre adjacent to the Cumming School of Medicine and Foothills Medical Centre is underway, and the successful applicant will have an opportunity to shape the Precision Oncology program for the new Cancer Centre.

Qualifications: Qualifications at the Associate Professor level include an MD (or equivalent) with five to ten years’ board certified experience in Anatomical and/or Hematological Pathology, with additional training/experience in a field related to translational cancer research or equivalent. A proven track record demonstrating research excellence including a strong publication record, evidence of successful teaching and supervision, evidence of established academic engagement/leadership and national level research grant success is mandatory.

Qualifications at the Professor level include an MD (or equivalent) with more than ten years board certified training in Anatomical and/or Hematological Pathology with additional training/experience in a field related to translational cancer research or equivalent. A proven track record demonstrating research excellence and national level research grant success is mandatory.

Applications at the Professor level must provide evidence of an outstanding academic publication record, successful teaching and supervision record; and evidence of outstanding academic service and/or leadership. Candidates must have the necessary credentials to deliver on the mission of the Chair to lead a novel research program that applies the genomics, metabolomics, microbiomics, and/or pharmacokinetics to the field of oncology, in alignment with the priorities of the Cumming School of Medicine and the University of Calgary including Eyes High Strategy.

The candidate must be eligible for Licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta. Must read, write and speak English. All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadians and Permanent Residents will be given priority.

Compensation: Remuneration will depend on experience and comply with the agreement between Cancer Control Alberta, Alberta Health Services and the Alberta Medical Association.
Compensation Grid Compensation range is between $314,781 (level 1) and $453,117 (level4).

The Practitioner is responsible for purchasing health and insurance benefits. Continuing Medical Education reimburses physicians for eligible continuing medical education costs. Each eligible Practitioner receives a $2,656 annual allotment which can be carried forward for three years.
