The Certified Pathologists' Assistant is an intensively trained allied health professional who performs a variety of anatomical pathology services under the direction of a specialist Anatomical Pathologist. The role includes the initial handling, dissection and gross examination of surgical and autopsy tissues; dictation of findings and selection and submission of appropriate tissues for pathological diagnosis. The Certified Pathologists' Assistant contributes to divisional efficiency by performing a broad range of tasks including the preparation and gross examination of tissues in the setting of surgical and non-forensic autopsy pathology thereby allowing the pathologists’ time to concentrate on diagnosis. The Certified Pathologists' Assistant role is to facilitate the practice of medicine by pathologists by helping to standardize and enhance the overall quality in the practice of anatomical pathology.
Hours of Work 7.5 hour shifts; Monday-Friday, Weekends, Holidays; Standby and Callback Qualifications
•Completion of an MSc, Pathologists’ Assistant (PA) Program
•Certification with the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) required
•Minimum of 2-5 years of related clinical experience required. Experience in a pediatric setting an asset
•Demonstrated knowledge of principles, methods and techniques related to procurement of specimens •Experience with gross dissection, frozen section micrometry and staining an asset
•Must have excellent knowledge of divisional practice, legal acts, and regulations governing the profession •Must have strong knowledge of technical, scientific processes related to division
•Excellent time management, organization and problem solving skills.
•Excellent communication, presentation and interpersonal skills.
•Demonstrates ability to develop and sustain internal/external partnerships.
•Demonstrates understanding of and commitment to family centred care.
•Competencies in other languages an asset; French preferred.
