The Canadian Certification Council of Pathology Laboratory Specialists (CCCPLS-CCCSLP) is pleased to announce that professionals in grossing technician, grossing technologist and autopsy technician-type roles may now apply for certification via the CCCPLS-CCCSLP.
The Pathologists’ Assistant (PA) profession has become established, standardized, and recognized throughout Canada in part due to the Canadian Association of Pathologists’ (CAP-ACP) implementing the CCCPA-CCCAP's ISO 17024 compliant PA certification process. The education and certification standard for PAs has opened an opportunity to formally recognize, through certification, non-PA roles to perform low complexity grossing that does not require a Master’s level education. This certification opportunity will allow employers across Canada a standardized criteria with which to help fill positions in order to keep up with the ever-increasing grossing workload while allowing their PAs to focus on more complex specimen types. Certification of these non-PA grossing staff also ensures that minimum continuing education requirements are met on an ongoing basis.
The certification of non-PA grossing professionals and Pathologists’ Assistants complement each other by clearly defining the grossing expectations of each; it provides transparency when hiring as well as defining scopes in the gross room. The outcome is increased quality of work with grossing staff professions held to distinct, but equally high standards.
