Vol. 11 Issue 4 of Canadian Journal of Pathology (CJP) features a tribute to Donald W. Penner – a mentor and friend to many in the Department of Pathology and the Medical School in Winnipeg and also to many of us in CAP-ACP. Dr.
Donald W. Penner passed away on March 26th, 2004, but his legacy and values live on through what he taught and a CAP-ACP Award that is named after him. Donald W. Penner was born in 1918 and raised in rural Saskatchewan where he acquired a strong sense
of Prairie values. Dr. Penner graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Manitoba in 1942. He undertook residency training in Pathology in Winnipeg followed by post-graduate studies in pathology at Memorial Hospital in New York. It
was in New York that he married his life-long partner Helen. After their return to Manitoba, he lived, and practiced, in Winnipeg until his retirement in 1989. From 1952 to 1980 he was Chair of the Department of Pathology at the Winnipeg General Hospital.

Background
The Donald W. Penner Prizes were established by the Canadian Association of Pathologists in 1977 to commemorate Dr. Penner’s 25 years of service to the Canadian Association of Pathologists’ Executive.
Purpose
To recognize the resident presenting the best proffered paper or the best poster at the Annual Meeting of the Association. There will be one award for each endeavour.
Award Amount
An amount of cash.
Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must be a resident in a pathology/laboratory medicine residency training program.
Application Procedure
On the abstract form for the CAP-ACP Annual meeting, the applicant should indicate that he/she wishes to be considered for a Donald W. Penner Award.
Application Deadline
Same as the abstract submission deadline for the CAP-ACP Annual Meeting.
