Dr. Johnston Robin Barr, M.B., Ch.B., F.R. C.P. C. January 27, 1927 - May 28, 2015
Robin died peacefully in the cardiovascular ICU at Toronto General Hospital after a short illness. He will be deeply missed by his daughter Ailsa Wiggins, grandsons, Gavin Wiggins (Jeri) and Callum Wiggins (Jamie), unborn great- granddaughter, sister Rita Barr (Joe Gordon), fiancée Pat Winter and his relatives in Scotland.
Robin was born in Glasgow, Scotland and grew up in Cape Town, South Africa, attending Diocesan College (Bishop's). He returned to Scotland to study medicine at the University of Glasgow where he met his late wife, Jean Paterson. Robin and Jean emigrated to Canada in 1951. After working as a country doctor and coroner in Palmerston and Merrickville, Ontario, Robin went on to complete postgraduate studies in pathology in Regina, Ottawa and Montreal. He worked as a pathologist at the Ottawa Civic Hospital for over 30 years. He was Chief of Anatomical Pathology at the Civic and associate professor of pathology at the University of Ottawa. He authored numerous peer reviewed articles and was president of the Ontario Association of Pathologists. He retired in 1992. After Jean died Robin moved to Toronto to be closer to Ailsa and her family.
Robin loved sailing, travelling, particularly to the UK and the West Indies, model ship building and bantering with his grandsons.
In lieu of flowers, donations will be gratefully accepted in Robin's memory by the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, June 4 at 1:30 p.m. at Leaside Presbyterian Church, 670 Eglinton Avenue East, Toronto.
